How To Apply
Acceptance in the translational neuroscience program is contingent upon admission to the graduate school and the graduate programs of the Wayne State University School of Medicine. Keep track of the TNP application process by checking off completed items and keeping a printed copy of the application checklist.
Applicants must have an undergraduate degree including several courses in biological sciences and additional course work in other scientific disciplines.
Degree Requirements
Students in the doctoral program are required to complete a minimum of 90 credits beyond the baccalaureate degree. View Course Bulletin
Required courses are:
- Biomedical Molecular Biology - IBS 7010 (5 credits)
- Biomedical Cell Biology - IBS 7020 (5 credits)
- Neurobiology I - PYC 7010 (3 credits)
- One elective course in the Interdisciplinary Biomedical Sciences (IBS) curriculum – chosen from Biomedical Functional Genomics - IBS 7030, Biomedical Cardiovascular, Respiratory and Renal Systems - IBS 7040, or Biomedical Endocrine and Reproductive Systems and Development - IBS 7060 (2 credits)
- Neuroanatomy - ANA 7130 (4 credits)
- Fundamentals of Neuroimaging - PYC 7140 (3 credits)
- Fundamentals of Neuropsychiatric Disorders (3 credits) - available Summer 2008
- Quantitative Methods in Psychology - PSY 7150 (3 credits)
- Responsible Conduct in Biomedical Research - BMS 6010 (1 credit)
- Research Problems - PYC 7996 (laboratory rotations, 9 credits)
- Clinical Problems (supervised clinical experiences in the student’s area of interest - 3 credits minimum, 6 credits maximum)
- Neuroscience Research Seminars (6 credits minimum, 8 credits maximum)
- Advanced Topics (starting in year 2) tailored to the individual trainee sampled from two general content areas: (a) Neuroscience Principles and Methods, and (b) Applications to Nervous System Disorders (12 credits minimum, 24 credits maximum)
- Dissertation Research (30 credits minimum) - Students are required to register for four semesters minimum at 7.5 credits per semester, but cannot earn more than 30 credits overall. Students must register for a maintenance course (0 credits) if the dissertation is not complete in four semesters.
A student is required to seek advice from a graduate advisor on his/her course selection. All course work must be completed according to regulations of the Graduate School and the School of Medicine governing graduate scholarship and degrees.
